Welcome to Beijing

A satire on Social Darwinism within the context of political authority.

Date/ Sept. to Dec, 2019

Type/ Academic, individual work

Location/ Jiuxianqiao, Beijing, China

It is based on the social event that deportation of foreigners in Beijing “low-end population” by government in 2017, the government's handling of it have triggered damaging press row.

In this project, I take the tone of the press to show the satire. In my fiction, In order to temporarily ease the attack on the image of rights, the government decided to establish a temporary residence to accommodate some people who were homeless due to the deportation,

In the state of dissociation, this area belongs to no community and remains hidden chaos in the seams of order. The residents here are mostly low-skilled labourers, fenced against by the old neighborhood of the industrial age and the commercial housing district across the river. In turn, these exotic tenants defend against intruders from outside and self-protection awareness. They live in the crack without restraint yet cautiously.

The residents are hidden behind the transparent facade, on display for the people outside, keeping their temporary living in Beijing bewilderedly. In the prison-like collective residency, they are arrayed to be watched, just as when they lined up to leave home.
